Top Four Best Houseplants for Beginner Plant Owners

Top Four Best Houseplants for Beginner Plant Owners

A question that we get asked here a lot at SproutSouth is, what plants are best for beginners?

So, we’ve compiled a short list of the best houseplants for beginners. These houseplants were picked because they are tolerant houseplants that won’t up and die on you if you forget a day of watering. Most of these plants are drought-tolerant and tolerate a variety of different lighting levels, so they can be placed in many different environments around your house, apartment, or office.

What makes a houseplant good for beginners is typically the amount of watering it needs on a regular basis, the light and humidity requirements, and the general hardiness of the plant.

Here are four houseplants that are best for beginners.

  • The philodendron mini monstera is an excellent choice for beginners who are just starting out their plant collections. The mini monstera isn’t actually a philodendron nor a monstera, it is a tetrasperma plant. This plant is a vining plant that is very fast-growing, so it is extremely rewarding for first time plant owners to view the quick growing progress. You can buy the mini monstera plant here.
  • The monstera adansonsii, also known as the swiss cheese plant, is another vining plant that is also very fast growing. You can buy the swiss cheese plant from SproutSouth, linked here. One thing that makes this plant great for beginners is that it does grow quickly, so new plant owners can very easily see the progress and feel good about the growth they are seeing with their new plant. This plant does have slightly more intense watering requirements than some of our other beginner plants on this list, but it’s unique leaf shape and fast growth make it a winner.
dracaena janet craig where to buy

  • The dracaena janet craig is a great, standard house plant to have on hand. This indoor houseplant is a great plant for beginners because she can tolerate a little bit of infrequent watering, and does well in a variety of different light placements. It grows slower than our first two plants on the easy care house plant list, but it has the drought resistant benefits and it also tolerates low light well. Plus, this houseplant looks great. You can purchase your very own janet craig dracaena houseplant here.
zz plant leaf close up
  • The ZZ plant is famous for being a great plant for beginner house plant owners. The ZZ plant is short for Zamioculcas Zamiifolia plant - what a mouthful! You can purchase your own ZZ plant for your home here. This plant can tolerate a wide variety of different light situations, and is extremely drought-tolerant, so if you forget to water this plant, it won’t be the end of the world! The ZZ plant does happen to be a slow growing plant, but its deep leafly leaves make a striking statement in any home, and it is absolutely the easiest plant to take care of on our beginner’s houseplant guide.

There are plenty of plants that could be considered the best houseplants for beginners, but we hope our list will give you a start into the wonderful world of plant ownership. Plants are highly rewarding to keep around, and some studies have shown that plant ownership can improve your mental wellbeing. At the very least, keeping plants around will beautify your space and improve your air quality. What's not to like!

Your information was very help full . I am also trying to grow succulents , I would appreciate information on this planet. I agree with you , I should have chosen something more simple like the ones in your article. Sometimes, I choose plants that look pretty. Again, I should have chosen one of the ones in your article.
